The departments offering internships in 2009 are:


Curatorial (1 position - Graduate student preferred)
The student intern in the Curatorial Department will research and write about baseball history and baseball artifacts to support the curatorial and exhibits programs at the Museum. A special focus will be the links between baseball and American social and cultural history. These aspects will include conducting primary and secondary research on the history and provenance of museum artifacts, researching the events of baseball history to find connections with American culture, and writing up the results of the findings. Other functions will include writing and editing exhibit labels, and researching and answering incoming correspondence.

Collections (2 positions - Graduate students preferred)
Each year, a different division of the three-dimensional museum collection is chosen as a primary focus for inventory, re-housing, condition reporting and digital photography. On-going artifact-based projects are also available in accordance with departmental needs and conservation recommendations.

Development (1 position - Undergraduate student preferred)
The Development intern will assist in the day-to-day operations of the Hall's development department including gift entry into the Hall's development software, processing of gift acknowledgements, assisting with donor correspondence and planning and execution of donor events. Other duties will include prospect research and participation in the design, messaging and overall presentation of the Hall of Fame's direct mail fundraising efforts.

Education (1 position - Graduate or undergraduate)
The 2009 Steele Education Intern will assist in augmenting, implementing and improving learning programs for school-age visitors and their families. These "family friendly" activities are generally for an audience between the ages of 5 and 12, although many generations often participate. Must be adept at, or exhibit a learning enthusiasm for giving presentations, speaking publicly and evaluating program results. Most of the intern's time is devoted to education and curriculum projects, with some time required for participation in public programs.

This position requires energy, zeal, creativity and eagerness to work with families in a fun, interactive manner. The ideal candidate will offer experience in teaching, drama or historical interpretation.

Information Systems (1 position - Graduate or undergraduate)
The intern will contribute to the daily operations of the Information Systems department. Duties will include but are not limited to Desktop troubleshooting and analysis, server and network support, backup support for IS staff, special event support and special technology projects. Qualified candidates should possess knowledge of Access, MySQL, Macintosh, PC's servers and Microsoft software. Candidates should also be enthusiastic and committed to excellent customer service.

Library-Recorded Media (1 position - Graduate student preferred)
The archive houses a variety of audio and moving image materials in about every format available. Interns will have the opportunity to experience a specialized archival environment outside of a traditional academic setting. Interns may gain experience in arrangement and description, determining preservation priorities, accession procedures, reformatting procedures, and handling patron research requests.
Assisting the Recorded Media Archivist, the intern will have hands-on experience opportunities learning how to handle special-format materials both physically and organizationally.

Library-Research (2 positions - Graduate students preferred)
The research department interns will assist in the day-to-day operations of a major specialized library. They will assist patrons by providing research material and answering questions that come in person, by letter, fax, phone and e-mail. Interns will retrieve and re-shelve library material. Interns will also complete a variety of other tasks including, but not limited to, fact-checking and document conservation.

Library-Technical Services (1 position - Graduate student preferred)
The Technical Services intern in the Library will gain work experience in various aspects of the department, such as cataloguing, de-accessioning, and archiving. Projects require attention to detail, ability to work independently, ability to follow directions and flexibility in day-to-day activities.

Membership (3 positions - Undergraduate students preferred)
The membership interns are part of the development department, helping to bolster enrollment in the Hall of Fame membership program. Working face to face and over the phone, interns practice salesmanship and learn about the department's business practices and marketing initiatives. The interns develop business etiquette and gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment.

Multi-Media (1 position - Undergraduate student preferred)
The multi-media intern assists with all facets of the department's responsibilities. Projects include: shooting, logging, digitizing and non-linear editing of video, the staging of museum events and the upkeep of museum A/V components in exhibits and public areas.

Museum Programs (4 positions - Undergraduate students preferred)
The Museum Programs interns will be responsible for desiginging and implementing programs for visitors. Interns will present programs in the museum on a daily basis, including Artifact Spotlight programs and costumed interpretation. Interns will develop their own costumed interpretation, with the goal of presenting their program by the end of the summer. In addition, each intern will have an individual project to work on and will present their work to the education department at the end of the summer.

Interns must be adept at, or exhibit a learning enthusiasm for: giving presentations, speaking publicly and evaluating program results. This position requires energy, zeal, creativity and eagerness to work with families in a fun, interactive manner. The ideal candidate will offer experience in museum work, teaching, drama or historical interpretation. Majors in history, drama, speech communication, museum studies or education preferred.

Photo Archives (1 position - Graduate student preferred)
The Photo Archives intern will be asked to organize the many individual photo collections now housed in our climate-controlled storage area. The intern will also be asked to create a finding aid for the storage area. Editing and identification work is needed for a large baseball slide collection. The intern will also assist with photo researchers via e-mail, mail, phone and fax.

Public Relations (2 positions - Undergraduate students preferred)
Assist Public Relations department with daily responsibilities, including media relations, baseball research and other duties as assigned. Candidate must possess some or all of the following qualities: enjoyment of baseball, high energy level, flexible disposition, reliability, good writing and organizational skills, basic computer proficiency. Responsibilities include: general office duties, assisting in daily programming endeavors including Father's Day Weekend and Induction Weekend, writing and editing for magazine and other publications projects producing stories for Induction Day and fall issues of Memories & Dreams magazine, and assist in fulfillment of photo requests for media and clubs.
